Who Is Eligible For a Burial Flag?

• A veteran who served during wartime
• A veteran who died on active duty after May 27, 1941
• A veteran who served after January 31, 1955
• A peacetime veteran who was discharged or released before June 27, 1950
• Certain persons who served in the organized military forces of the Commonwealth of the Philippines while in service of the U.S. Armed Forces and who died on or after April 25, 1951
• Certain former members of the Selected Reserves

Apply For A United States Burial Flag

Anybody can apply for a burial flag for a deceased veteran by filling out VA Form 27-2008. They can be picked up at a post office or VA regional office. You can help the funeral director by completing the application as thoroughly as possible. They are able to ease the burden of family members and authorize flag pickup from a post office. 

Displaying The Burial Flag

The burial flag should not be displayed outside because of the fabric material. When used to drape a closed casket, the flag should be placed in a way that the blue field is at the head and over the left shoulder of the deceased. When the flag is displayed in a Half-couch casket, it will cover the closed half, with the blue field covering the top fold.
