Ophelia Simpson, daughter of Lloyd and Capitola Whitecotton, was born August 2, 1936 in the family home in Rock Springs. She passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020.
As a deaf person, Ophelia attended Stoneberg and Goldberg Public Schools. She later achieved her certification as a key punch operator. In 1964, TTY's were introduced and she was featured in a full page article in the Houston Chronicle demonstrating the technology. She married Billy Simpson on Thanksgiving Day, 1953. As a member of Woodhaven Baptist Deaf Church in Houston, she enjoyed friends and community. As a talented seamstress, she worked at Sunny Road in Houston, Volvo as a key punch operator, as well as working at the post office for 10 years. Later in life, she found her calling to work with the deaf and blind at Nightingale Home Health Care, and brought comfort and joy to many with her kindness. Ophelia always had a big smile for you and a sign for "I love you". Remembered fondly by her children and grandchildren as OP, her sweet and kind spirit will always warm their hearts. She loved her family and will be dearly missed.
Ophelia is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Simpson; and brother, Gerald Whitecotton.
Ophelia is survived by her sons, Lloyd, Randy and Terry Simpson; daughter in laws, Lori, Debra and Tashia Simpson; sister, Jackie Stillwell; brother and sister in law, Robbie and Dorothy Whitecotton; 6 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
