Marie Adelina Hufford, born May 7, 1942, to Fernando Joaquin Nunes and Marie Ellen Nunes (Francis), passed away peacefully at home on August 20, 2025. She was 83. Marie graduated from New Bedford High School in New Bedford, MA. She worked in leather goods as a business partner at Tony's Shoe Box in Hyannis, MA. Known for her creative spirit and exceptional talent in holiday float design, Marie left a colorful trail of joy in her community, capturing the hearts of many and earning numerous awards for her festive creations. She also, with the help of stepdaughter, Maria, won many awards for transforming her home into a magical Christmas wonderland of lights and handmade decorations every year. Her first-place winners were featured across the front page of The Cape Cod Times, year after year.
Throughout her life, Marie's flair for design and her ability to transform ideas into visual spectacles brought joy during the holiday seasons. With each float she crafted, Marie spread cheer and wonder, turning ordinary parades into memorable celebrations that brought communities together in appreciation of art and tradition.
Marie's legacy is not only etched in the beauty of her floats but also in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to witness her artistry in motion. Among her many talents are a passion for crochet, and her natural musical ability shown through her skill with the organ and accordion. Marie was best known for her love of animals, especially fur babies, Benney and most recently, Peanut.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hufford; son-in- law, Dominic H. Barros; granddaughter, Jaci Brianna Lynn Elliott, and grandson Dominic J Barros.
She is survived by her 5 children: Laura Bailey (Sousa), Tony Sousa, Jeffrey Sousa, David Sousa (Katie), Vicky Elliott (John), and stepdaughter, Maria Leavitt (Mike); 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd at 1 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Tolar, Texas.
