James Russell
June 29, 1969 – July 8, 2025
James Russell, 56, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at 2:33 PM at John Peter Smith Hospital. Born on June 29, 1969, in Marks, Mississippi, James carried the heart of the South with him throughout his life. Though he spent his later years in Texas, he always said Biloxi, Mississippi was his true home. He loved the ocean there, and one of his final wishes was to have his ashes spread in the water—a place that brought him peace.
In his younger years, James worked as a painter, a trade that reflected his hands-on spirit and creativity. As life grew more difficult, James faced many challenges and spent his later years without stable housing. But no matter what he went through, he never stopped being a father, a brother, and most of all, a deeply loving grandfather.
James had a big heart, even if he was known to be hard-headed and stubborn at times. He had a sharp personality, but it was balanced with loyalty and care. He had a deep love for food—especially chicken—and he showed his love through acts of giving. Whether it was Christmas presents, your favorite takeout, or a surprise treat, he always found a way to show up for his kids, especially his oldest daughter. He gave all that he could, and then some.
James is survived by his daughters: Madilynn Miller, Bobbi Lape, and Megan Lape; his beloved grandchildren, Kailani Johnson (age 3) and Khylin Miller (age 2); his son-in-law, Daylon Johnson; and his stepson, Abron Englebert, whom he cared for like his own. He is also survived by his brothers: Walter Parker, Tommy Poole, and Ricky Englebert; his mother, Marilynn Diane Poole; his father, Larry Russell; and his former girlfriend, Daphne Robinson, who was a significant part of his life.
James may not have lived an easy life, but he gave love in his own way. He was the best father he knew how to be, and even though he could be rough around the edges, he never let his kids go without. His love was strong, sometimes silent, but always present.
He will be cremated by Fort Worth Funerals & Cremations, located at 8808 Camp Bowie Blvd, Suite 170, Fort Worth, TX 76116. Honoring his wish, his ashes will be spread in the ocean, where he can finally rest in the place he loved most—Biloxi.
